But the way it evolves into an in-depth exploration of cliché tropes makes it one of the most interesting reality shows currently airing. It’s impressive how it manages to pull off this nuanced take on dating shows while maintaining its delightfully trashy allure. I found that the way that Rische wrote was enlightening and a delight to read. She made it as though we were best friends and she was sharing her struggles in her quest of finding her mate. Secondly, James contradicts himself rather often.
It’s not quite a traditional dating show that you’d watch while soaked in wine on a friend’s couch over the course of a few months. It’s located in a strange place between those poles, largely staged and synthetic, and yet at times startlingly real. I think it’s tempting to segment our churches and our relationships by age and stage. I was challenged by this book to remember that we all need to be learning from and encouraging each other. Stephanie relates how she’s learned from older married women, children, single friends, and even her date duds.
This is problematic for a couple of reasons, the biggest being, they all just dated each other. Days before the romantic getaway, these people weren’t with who they’re with now and some of them were thinking about being with someone else, and those someone else’s are now at the same hotel. This is really where the cliche reality TV drama comes into play. If the couples had been whisked away to different destinations, it could have kept the experiment more pure and taken one of the unnecessary, drama-inducing variables out of the equation.
The two main characters obviously have stresses in their lives which I feel could have been explored more. But instead the movie focuses on the pranks that get pulled on Danny and the various nut-jobs his brother sets him up with. Personally I would have liked to see Danny and Leeza’s relationship become deep and really feel their connection over the sometimes crude humor. I would have liked to see more of Leeza struggling with the cultural differences rather than a few teary eyes when she is at dinner with her family.
But it does seem more brutally frank than most dating shows, if not in what they are actually saying to each other, then in how they are talking about themselves.
